HERMAN STUART LEWIS (FMHS 1948) 2005-02-04 Herman Stuart Lewis, age 74 of Ft. Myers, formerly a 42 year resident of Tampa, passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2005. He was born on May 29, 1930 in Richmond, KY. He was a graduate of Ft. Myers High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Air Force where he received an honorable discharge. He attended Tennessee Tech and graduated with a business degree. He started his own business, H.S. Lewis Wholesale Glads, where he worked until retiring. His life was a spectrum of unusual characters and incidents. He is survived by five daughters, Sarah Michelle Lewis, Kelly Kay & Dan Walker, Lisa Lewis & Steven Schwerdteger, Cynthia "Crickett" Lewis, Desiree & Doug Johnson; granddaughters, Tara, Alisha, Tiffany, Serena, and Rebecca; grandsons, Lewis, Keith, Parker, and Mitchell. Funeral Service will be 1:00 PM, Friday, February 4, 2005, visitation one hour prior to service at Old Miakka Methodist Church in Old Myakka, FL with Pastor Eric Shepard & Pastor Marion officiating. GRACE DYCHES PENNINGTON (FMHS 1931) 2005-02-05 Grace Dyches Pennington, 91, of Immokalee, born June 17, 1913 in Alva, FL passed away peacefully Feb. 3, 2005 at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral. She was a Charter Member of the First Methodist Church of Immokalee established December of 1952 in Immokalee. She was the very first president, and a life-long member, of the Womens Society of the First Methodist Church, which is now the First United Methodist Church of Immokalee. She is preceded in death by her husband J.W. Pennington. She is survived by one son John Wayne Pennington and his wife Anita of Ft. Myers, one granddaughter Gina Pennington Scalfaro and husband Anthony Scalforo of Bonita Springs, one sister Margaret Tuttle of Naples; two step grandsons Coyle Jones of Ft. Myers and Shane Barker of Dresden, TN, two sisters-in-law Frankie Wallace of Bartow & Virginia Pennington Terrill (FMHS 1938) of Jenkins, KY and a host of nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all, but never forgotten. Brister Funeral Home of Immokalee are in charge of arrangements. MORETA BROWNING (FMHS 1930) 1931-11-8 FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS, Aug. 11, 1931--The body of Miss Moreta Browning, 18 years old, killed Sunday night in an automobile accident on the Tamiami Trail, will leave this morning at 9:15 o'clock for Mobile, Ala., where funeral services will be held. The body of Hewitt Parsons, 21, of Fort Myers, killed in the same accident, left for New York last night. The mother and a sister of the young man reside in New York and requested that the body be sent there for burial. Miss Browning's mother and Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Hall will accompany the girl's body. Survivors include Mrs. Claude Christy of Mobile, Mrs. Willie Neel of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Mrs. J. E. Ford of Fort Myers, aunts of the dead girl and Earl McGill and Hiram McGill of Everglades, uncles. Parsons had been studying law in the office of J. Bowers Campbell here for some time. BRENDA JEANETTE UNDERWOOD (KEENE) (FMHS 1949) 2002-03-30 Brenda J. Keene, 70, of Fort Myers, died March 27, 2002. She was born in Fort Myers a daughter of the late Owen R. and Katherine (McLaughlin) Underwood (FMHS 1929). She was a granddaughter of the owners and operators of McLaughlin Dairy. Brenda graduated from Ft. Myers High School in 1949. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, V.F.W. of Ft. Myers and she was also a member of the Submarine Veteran's Wives Association. Mrs. Keene is survived by her husband of 53 years Archie, her sons and daughters-in-law Gary (FMHS 1969) and Linda Keene of Fort Myers, James (FMHS 1970) and Sharalyn Keene of West Gardiner, ME, her sister Martha Klein (FMHS 1950) of Fort Myers, her brother and sister-in-law David and Penny Underwood of England, seven grandchildren, two great- grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends who will miss and love her always. She was predeceased by her brother Gene Underwood. JEBTHA LOUIS "JEB" ALTMAN SR (FMHS 1950) 2002-03-05 Jebtha L.'Jeb' Altman, Sr., 70, of Ft. Myers, died Saturday, March 2, 2002. A lifelong resident of this area and a veteran of the Korean War, he was a retired supervisor, with 34 years of service, for Florida Power and Light and was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. Mr. Altman is survived by his wife of 45 years, Phyllis Altman, a son, Jebtha L. (Connie) Altman, Jr., 3 daughters, Carmen (Dean) Williams, Carla (Larry) Ronco, Carlene (Mark) Burkhead, all of Ft. Myers, nine grandchildren, Robby, Tyler, Tayler, Jonathan, Travis, and Faith, Aaron, Louis & Jennifer. Also, a brother, Ronnie Altman (FMHS 1963) of Ft. VERDIE HIGGINBOTHAM (PARKER) (FMHS 1932) 2005-03-03 Verdie (Higginbotham) Parker, 94, of Buckingham, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, she was born to Drew and Mamie Higginbotham on January 19, 1911 in Buckingham. Mrs. Parker is survived by her children Jerry (George) Mills, Rusty (Jo) Parker of Buckingham, Patsy (Lewis) Hickman of Virginia, her brother Addison Higginbotham of Buckingham, her 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Russell G. Parker, a baby son and four brothers Upton, Alfred (FMHS 1929), Ned and Fred. Mrs. Parker enjoyed taking care of her cows, chickens and dog until late in her life, she loved being with her children and grand kids, they were the joy in her life, she was a life long member of The First Baptist Church of Buckingham. HAZEL SPENCER (SANTINI) (FMHS 1934) Dec 11, 1993 Fort Myers News Press, Dec 11, 1993 Hazel Spencer Santini, 77, of Fort Myers, died Dec. 9th at her home, 1824 Paul St., Ft. Myers. She was born Nov. 17, 1916 in Jacksonville, Fla. She moved to Ft. Myers when she was 11, graduating from Fort Myers High School in 1934. She attended Florida State University and was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She was married in 1935 to Joseph G. Santini (FMHS 1930) who was born in Fort Myers and played football for Fort Myers High School. He preceded her in death in 1983. They moved to Key West, Fla. at the end of WWII where she retired from teaching at St. Mary's Catholic Church in 1979. While a resident of Key West, she belonged to the Key West Garden Club and the DAV auxiliary. She moved back to Fort Myers in 1979 and has resided at Paul St. since that time. She belonged to the Royal Palm Garden Club in Fort Myers. She was was to be honored Dec 16th as a life time member of the State Counsel of Garden Clubs. She was a member of the Lee County Pioneer Club and St. Cecelia's Catholic Church. She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Sandra (George) Smith of Miramar, Fla., her children, George-Ann Smith Ely, Kevin Smith, and Barbara Smith Cochrane, and Mrs. Martha (Rod) Stants and her daughter Christy Bachman. her survivors also include the children of her deceased son, Joseph G. Santini, Jr.: Joann Santini Rodriguez of Hollywood, Fla., and Jolynn Santini of Seabrook, Texas. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Tiffany Bachman. She has six great-grandchildren. ELLEN MAY WADSWORTH (DALLE-NOGARE) (FMHS 1964) 2005-02-26 Ellen May Wadsworth Dalle-Nogare, 58, of Ft. Myers, died Wed Feb 23, 2005. Ellen had been a resident of Ft. Myers for 44 years, formerly of Warren, RI. Ellen was born Mar 12, 1946 in Pawtucket, RI the daughter of George W. & Eunice McLaughlin Wadsworth. Ellen was a loyal employee of Lee Memorial Health Systems for over 35 years; working in the Radiology Department. Ellen was an avid reader, card player, and bingo enthusiast; with a wonderful sense of humor. Ellen was a beautiful friend to those who knew her and always wore her "heart on her sleeve". A loving mother to Donald W Dalle-Nogare (FMHS 1990) and Leigh Ann Dalle-Nogare (FMHS 1994) and devoted grandmother to Tegan. Ellen also leaves behind her former husband and best friend John, brother George A. Wadsworth (Donnita) and a very special friend & niece Lauren Lori Wadsworth (FMHS 1990), as well as many other loved nieces, nephews, and extended family members. EDWARD WILLIAM (TED) EVANS, SR. (FMHS 1935) 2005-03-07 Edward William (Ted) Evans, Sr. passed away peacefully Saturday, March 5, at Hope Hospice in Ft. Myers. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Kate and his brother Jack. A resident of Ft. Myers for his 86 years, he graduated from Ft. Myers High in 1935 and served his country in World War II. He began his banking career in 1946 at The First National Bank of Fort Myers where he rose from bookkeeper to Senior Chairman of the Board. Until his retirement in 2003, his 58 year career followed the tenant that everyone in the teller line was important and that each individual deserved special attention and quality service. In 1986 he helped found the National Bank of Lee County, now known as Southtrust/Wachovia Bank. Ted received his crown as "King of Edisonia" from the hands of the late Mrs. Thomas A. Edison in 1947. Ted's grandmother, Carrie Evans, wife of Mr. E. L Evans, and daughter of pioneer cattle baron and political leader, Captain Francis A. Hendry was close personal friends with Mr. Edison. When Thomas A. Edison stopped by the H.L. Roan store in 1885, where Mr. E. L. Evans was employed to ask about the fishing, Mr. Evans enthusiastically persuaded him to stay and they became lifelong and best friends. A dedicated civic leader, Ted was United Way President twice, serving on the boards of YMCA, Southwest Florida Community Foundation, The Salvation Army and other civic groups too numerous to mention. Surviving family includes his son, Ted Evans, Jr., his wife Kim and their daughter Kimberly who reside in Arcadia, Florida and a second son, Harry Stucky Evans, wife Cathy and grandsons Landon and Reese who reside in Allen, Texas. Ted also leaves behind his dear friend Dick Ackert whose friendship spanned 45 years. On Wednesday, March 9, friends may call from 5 PM to 6 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 2438 Second Street in downtown Ft. Myers. A service will be held at 6 PM. The family will make available photos and memorabilia spanning 120 years of Lee County history commemorating Ted's love of Ft. Myers during the visitation. ADAM THOMAS MULLEN (FMHS 2000) 2002-09-26 Adam Thomas Mullen, 19, Cape Coral. Born on September 23, 1983 left us much too early courageously, with dignity and enduring love for his family. Loving son of Ronald and Cindy Mullen, dear brother of Andrew Mullen and his wife Keri (Mason). Sadly missed by his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and many friends. Graduate of Fort Myers High School (FMHS 2000). Student at Stetson University. He enjoyed the fellowship of the Super Coupe Clubs. NANCY CARROLL (SKINNER) (FMHS 1968) 2005-02-24 Nancy Skinner, age 55, of N. Ft. Myers, lost her courageous battle with breast cancer and passed away at home on February 21, 2005. Born June 7, 1949 in Pittsburgh, PA she was the daughter of James and Eleanor (Sullivan) Carroll. The family relocated to South Florida where Nancy's early childhood was spent in Miami. As a teenager she moved to Ft. Myers and attended Ft. Myers High School, living in the area for more than 40 years. Nancy worked in the health care field for many years as a medical administrator for physician services. Her hobbies included needle crafts such as crocheting, knitting and sewing. She was talented as a creative quilter and crafter. Many of her family members and friends hold cherished works created by Nancy's gifted hands. During the time her three daughters were growing up, Nancy volunteered as a cheerleading coach and many of the young ladies of the area will remember her cheerfulness, good humor, kindness and generosity. Dedicated to her husband and daughters, Nancy had a warm and loving nature, unselfishly giving priority to the needs of others. She especially enjoyed family gatherings and vacations in the Skinner cabin in the Smoky Mountains. Nancy's devotion to her husband was inspiring. Commitment to her family was unfailing, her love boundless, and her strength unshakable. Survivors include David Skinner, Nancy's loving, devoted husband of 38 years; three adoring daughters; Monica (Ray) Adkins and Melissa Skinner, both of N. Ft. Myers, and Michelle (Sean) Loy of Wheeling, WV; a treasured grandson, Bryce Adkins, and a future grandchild to be born in September 2005 (Baby Loy); sister Eleanor (William) Nelson of Parachute, CO, Susan Snyder of Ft. Myers and Kathryn (Behzad) Habibnejad of Melbourne; and several nieces and nephews. Nancy was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Christine. A celebration of life will be held at Grace Church, 13 S.E. 21st Place, (corner of Hancock Bridge Pkwy and S.E. 21st Place), Cape Coral, FL on Saturday, February 26, 2005 at 11:00 AM with a reception to immediately follow in the fellowship hall. THERESA MARIE POTTINGER (SANDS) (FMHS 1961) 2005-03-11 Mrs. Theresa Pottinger Sands, age 61, of Fort Myers, Florida passed away on Tuesday March 8, 2005 at Health Park Medical Center. Born in Fort Myers on August 16, 1943, Theresa was the daughter of the late George and Mila Honc Pottinger (FMHS 1938). Her family has been in the nursery business in Fort Myers and Bokeelia since the 1920's. She graduated from Fort Myers High School in 1961. On September 17, 1961, Theresa married Raymond J. Sands Sr. of Miami, Florida and had five children together, Ray-Ray, Michael, Theresa, Steven and Tanya. Her husband preceded her in death in May 16, 1977. The family lived in West Palm Beach, Florida until relocating back to Fort Myers in 1990. Theresa was a licensed general contractor with the State of Florida, and continued in the family business operating Sands Sunset Vista Nursery with her three sons. Theresa was a faithful member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in downtown Fort Myers as well as donating to many of the area diocese. She participated in and sponsored many community activities including Edison Festival of Lights, Inc., Cypress Lake High School, and Rutenburg Little League. Theresa especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren's athletics and activities. She constantly put her family and friends feelings ahead of her own, until her untimely death. Theresa is survived by, her three sons and two daughters Raymond (CJ O'-Haver) Michael, Steven (Kim) Sands, Theresa (Michael Ficarro), and Tanya (Harris Wolin) and by her grandchildren; Anthony, Angela, Joseph, Raychel, Victoria, and Austin. Her brother Jerry and wife Sue Pottinger, sister Milla and husband Richard Vollinger, sister-in-law Bobbie and Sam Wainwright, and sister-in-law Ann and Rick Rapp also survive her. WILLIAM D "DOUG" WILKINSON (FMHS 1966) 2005-03-11 William D. "Doug" Wilkinson, 57, of Ft. Myers died Wednesday, March 9, 2005. Doug was a lifelong resident of Ft. Myers, born in Tampa, Florida on February 4, 1948. Doug began his career as a Fireman and Police Officer with the City of Ft. Myers. In 1974 he became Court Administrator for the 20th Judicial Circuit serving in that position for 28 years. In 2002 Doug accepted the position as the Executive Director for the office of the State Attorney for the 20th Circuit. Doug is survived by his loving family; wife Kathy Wilkinson, stepson Matthew Fronk, his mother, Maxine Bowie and father, Les Wilkinson of Engelwood; his son, William D. Wilkinson, Jr. of Ft. Myers and his wife Stacey; his daughter Karen Pergerson of Dade City and her husband Terry; 2 brothers, Leslie and Welton Wilkinson; 3 grandchildren, Amanda Wilkinson, Shannon Wilkinson, Shannon Wilkinson and Corey Pergerson; numerous aunt and uncles; nieces and nephews; extended family and beloved friends. SARAH TOOKE (SAPP) (FMHS 1943) 24-09-1999 FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS, Monday, October 11, 1999 Mrs. Sarah Tooke Sapp of Fort Myers, FL, and Franklin, NC, died Friday morning, September 24, 1999, in Atlanta, GA, at the home of her daughter, Tomi (FMHS 1966). Sarah was a direct descendant of Captain Manuel A. Gonzalez, first settler of Fort Myers, and the daughter of Charlton Taylor Tooke and Hazel Irene Morris. She had two brothers, Charlton Taylor "Bud" Tooke III (FMHS 1946), and the late Joseph Clyatt "Joe" Tooke (FMHS 1940). During her early life, she was active as a dancer, performing locally and for private residents such as Ms. Jetty Burroughs of the famed Burroughs typewriter family. After graduation from Fort Myers High School, she worked briefly at the courthouse before meeting and marrying Clifton "Dimples" Sapp (FMHS 1937). They had three children: Tomi Irene (FMHS 1966), David Clifton (FMHS 1969), and Alan Kimberly (FMHS 1974). As a parent, Sarah was active in the PTA and volunteered for the American Cancer Society. She was also a life-long member of the Pioneer Club of Fort Myers. After the death of her husband, she built a home in Franklin, NC. The community where she lived provided many dear friendships and an opportunity through her new social life to reconnect with her love of dancing. She will be remembered always for her love and knowledge of nature, native flowering plants and birds, and the knowledge and passion for it that she passed along. Her daughter, two sons, a brother, five nieces, two nephews, three sisters-in-law, a daughter-in-law, three aunts, several cousins, and four grandchildren survive her. Myers having been born in January 21, 1931 to Albert and Louise Goldie Hansen. Mrs. Daeger worked for the Lee County Tax Collectors office for many years and had been a member of Edgewood United Methodist Church. She was born in Atmore, AL to Elmer and Louise (Bauer) Bronstrup (deceased) and grew up in Mt. Healthy, OH. She moved to the Iona area of Ft. Myers with her family as a teenager and graduated from Ft. Myers High School. Helen was married to Roland Shanahan (deceased) for 62 years. They were members of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and its Forever Young Group. They enjoyed many years of boating and fishing. Helen enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading, and taking care of her pets. She also loved spending time with her family and friends and was grateful for the long and full life that she lived. WINFIELD MINOR BOYETTE (FMHS 1938) 2000-06-06 Winfield Minor Boyette, 80, of Fort Myers, passed away on June 3, 2000. He was born in Baker, FL, grew up in Fort Myers, graduated from Fort Myers High School in 1938, and worked for Inter-County Telephone/United Telephone Company/Sprint for 34 years. His wife, Diane Roberts Boyette (FMHS 1941), predeceased him. During World War II, Mr. Boyette served his country in North Africa and Europe in an anti-aircraft unit, and was overseas for the majority of the war years. Mr. Boyette is known for his retirement hobby of cast net building. He spent many hours fishing and enjoying the Florida outdoors. EDWARD MURDOCK "EDDIE" HENDRY SR (FMHS 1953) 2001-03-04 Edward Murdock Hendry was born on Oct. 13, 1935 in Panama City, FL, son of the late Leah Crevassee and Edward Everett Hendry. He was a great-grandson of Florida pioneer, Captain Francis Asbury Hendry. Ed lived his entire life in his beloved State of Florida. Loved and loving father, grandfather and brother died March 2, 2001. Ed grew up in Ft. Myers and graduated from Ft. Myers High School where he excelled in sports. He then attended college on an athletic scholarship and later served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corp. Ed never met a stranger and was loved by everyone who was privileged to know him. He was a gentle man with great strength of character who blessed the lives of family and friends alike. It is our great loss and heaven's gain. JAMES "JIM" HAROLD POLLOCK MD (FMHS 1948) 2004-12-28 James Harold Pollock, M.D., died on December 18, 2004, after a long courageous struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on April 25, 1931, to Harold and Margaret Pollock in Columbus, OH. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Hester "Tess" Hough Pollock (FMHS 1948), in May of 2003. He is survived by his four children: his sons James Scott Pollock (Lourdes) of Boynton Beach, FL and Gregory Hough Pollock (Holly) of Merritt Island, FL, and his daughters Elise Shankle (Stephen) of Peachtree City, GA and Leslie Bachman (David) of Moorpark, CA; his ten grandchildren: Benjamin, Daniel, and Nathan Shankle, Annalise, Alexander, and Lydia Bachman, Reed and Tessa Pollock, and Khiara and Jenelle Pollock; his sister Marilyn Groezinger (Herman) of Sebring, FL; and his two brothers-in-law Van Hough of Mars Hill, NC and Scott Hough of Reston, VA; and his secretary of 40 years Carol Imboden. Jim grew up in Westerville, OH, and became an avid golfer at an early age. By the age of 14 he was competing and continued to do so for most of his life. He played golf for Westerville High School, Fort Myers High School (where he wintered with his family), and Duke University. While at Duke he was co-captain of the golf team with Mike Souchak. Through the years he won many titles, notably the 1951 Columbus District Amateur Golf Championship (an accomplishment he would later share with Jack Nicklaus who won the title five years later). Pursuing a career in medicine Jim graduated from Duke University and Duke University Medical School in Durham, NC where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and several honorary societies. While at Duke he was elected Inter-Fraternity Council President. Dr. Pollock completed his internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, TX. While in Dallas he went on to complete his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Baylor, Parkland Memorial, and Scottish Rite Hospitals. When he moved his young family to Boynton Beach in 1961 he became the only Orthopaedic surgeon between Lake Worth and Pompano Beach. Dr. Pollock served on the staff at Bethesda Memorial Hospital and retired in 1986. He was a member of The First Presbyterian Church in Boynton Beach where, for many years he was a member of the choir and often performed solos for Sunday services. He was also a member of Kiwanis, and an active supporter of Atlantic (originally Seacrest) High School's football program. As team physician for 20 years Dr. Pollock could be found most Friday nights during football season on the field with the team ready to attend to injuries as they happened. Richards and Hazell Richards, was born in Lakeland, Florida on January 17, 1918. He moved to Fort Myers with the family on Jan. 1, 1920. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eugenia Dickinson Richards; son and daughter-in-law, Hugh Jr. and Karen Richards of Cerritos, CA, son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Julie Richards of Fort Myers and sister-in-law, Mary Grey Richards of Fort Myers. He is also survived by grandchildren, Karla (Guido) Richards Rossi of Florence, Italy, Darilynn Richards of Aspen, CO, Shannon Richards of Long Beach, CA and Larry Jones of Tampa, FL. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive him with special gratitude to R.Q. (Dick) Richards and Lindsay Richards. Mr. Richards attended local schools and Emory University in Valdosta, GA. Following college he was employed by Tampa Drug Company in Tampa leaving to join the family pharmacy business, which operated the Royal Palm Pharmacy on First Street and Richards Prescriptions on Hendry Street. He remained there until 1972 at which time he joined First National Bank, followed later by his association with Cape Coral Bank (Now SunTrust). He was an active member of First United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the Fort Myers Lions Club and a member of Tropical Lodge #56, Fort Myers Commandery and Araba Shrine Temple. Mr. Richards was active in business and social circles throughout his life. Pallbearers will be Joe Barbee, Joel Brown, George Coryell, Fred Curtis, Stanley Hanson and Tom Heldreth. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 27 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. George A. Bouie officiating. HUGH DANIEL MATER (FMHS 1965) 2004-01-18 Hugh Daniel Mater, 58, a native of Ft. Myers, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 14, 2004. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Hugh served his country through the Viet Nam Conflict, was an auto mechanic and a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who lived for his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife 'Mercy' whom he met in the Philippines over 37 years ago, children; Dale Mater (LeAnne), of Ft. Myers High School. Ricky had a long affiliation with the Cape Coral American Little League as a manager and Cape Coral Youth Football as a coach. CHARLES KENNETH "KEN" WILLIAMS SR (FMHS 1949) 2005-03-27 Charles Kenneth "Ken" Williams, Sr. was born August 11, 1930 in Mount Pleasant, Florida. He is predeceased by his parents "Bessie" and Audra Williams. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Olive Lorraine Simpson (Williams) (FMHS 1951) son Charles "Chuck" Williams, Jr., granddaughter Amy Nolan of Ft. Myers, daughter and husband Kenette and Peter A. Newcombe, grandson, Christopher Newcombe of Tallahassee. Ken came to Ft. Myers in 1938. He graduated from Ft. Myers High School in 1949 and was drafted into the Marine Corp and after his discharge attended Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas where he obtained his BA in Agriculture Education. In 1972 Ken decided to return to Ft. Myers and begin his own business, which eventually led to his association with Tempaco, a heating and air conditioning supply business. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 28, 2005, 7:00 PM at the Gulfcoast Church of Christ, 3825 McGregor Blvd., Ft. Myers, FL 33901. OSCAR "PETE" PEACE (FMHS 1941) 2004-07-28 Lt Cmdr (USN Ret) OSCAR "PETE" PEACE, was born July 1, 1922 to father Edwin and mother Lolita in Fort Myers, FL, and died July 23, 2004 at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, NC as a consequence of Parkinson's disease. Pete enlisted in the US Navy in 1940 at the age of 17. A distinguished 30 year career at sea followed, spanning 3 wars. During World War II he served aboard the USS Trenton and the USS Sampson, which fought at Guadalcanal and escorted General Douglas MacArthur out of the Philippines. He later served aboard the USS Missouri and was present at the signing of the peace accords that ended the Pacific campaign in victory against Japan. During the Korean war he served on the USS Porter, and during the Vietnam War on the staff at Com Nav Air Lant. He retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in 1970 and moved to Charlotte NC. Pete was a member of Ft. Myers Pioneer Club. On the day of his retirement from the service he was hired by Products Research to oversee shipbuilding and repairs on naval and cruise vessels and he traveled the world in this capacity. A devoted family man, Pete is survived by his wife of 40 years, Elizabeth (Betsy); daughters Julie Peace and husband, Chris of Charlotte, Paula (FMHS 1970) and husband, Andy Reiss of Nashville TN, and Pamela Wood of Naples, FL; grandchildren Olivia and Roman Peace, Louisa and Will Reiss, Danielle and Christine DeSantis, and Katie Wood; and 3 great grandchildren; mother-in-law, Martha Farmer, sister-in-law, Ellen Howell, sister, Lolita Rohrbacher; nephews, Joseph, James and David Norcom and Roger Rohrbacher; nieces, Laura Owens and Patricia Norcom. BARBARA "BOBBIE" IRELAND (BECKETT) (FMHS 1942) 2004-07-27 Barbara 'Bobbie' Ireland Beckett passed away July 25, 2004. Bobbie was a native of Ft. Myers. She was born June 11, 1924, the daughter of David and Anne Ireland. She graduated from Ft. Myers Senior High School and attended Agnes Scott in Atlanta, GA. She married John T. Beckett August 3, 1943. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 70 years. Her love was her family and friends. She gave freely of herself for the care of them. Bobbie will best be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor. She was a very special woman who will always be loved, treasured and missed. RALPH ALLEN RICHARDSON SR (FMHS 1950) 2000-08-11 Ralph A. Richardson, Sr., 67, died August 9, 2000 at Hope Hospice House of Fort Myers. Mr. Richardson had been a resident of Fort Myers since 1943, moving to Bonita Springs in 1990. Born August 12, 1932 in Gardi, GA to Alexander P. Richardson and Mary Kate Roberts. Ralph attended Lee County Schools and graduated in 1950 from Fort Myers High School. He attended Florida State University from 1950 to 1954, moved on to the University of Florida College of Law and graduated in 1960 with his LLB, which was later converted to Juris Doctor in 1964. A member of the Florida Bar since 1960 and practiced law for the same period in Lee county, Ralph was a sole practitioner since 1969 with his primary office in Bonita Springs. He was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1966. He was a member of the Lee County Bar Association where he was president in 1978. Ralph was the attorney for the First National Bank of Bonita Springs for more than 30 years until the bank was sold in 1998. Ralph was past president of the Bonita Springs Chamber of Commerce and was Fort Myers News Press' "Father of the Year" in 1974. He served two years in the U.S. Army and was a charter and continuing member of the Elks Club of Bonita Springs and a founding director of Southwest Florida Addiction Services. Ralph is survived by his wife, Carol Cannon of Bonita Springs; son, Ralph Allen (Holly Steuart) Richardson of Bonita Springs; two daughters, Candy Richardson of Fort Myers, and Robin Richardson Reese of Boca Raton; a brother, M. Ken Richardson of Houston, TX; two sisters Louise Rogers of PA, and Geneva Buchanan of Jacksonville, FL; and a grandson, Ryan Davis. He was born in Fort Myers and was a lifetime resident. Mr. Welch was a veteran of WWII where he served in the 100th Division Marching Band. He was retired from the Fort Myers Housing Authority. Mr. Welch was a member of McGregor Baptist Church and a 32nd Degree Mason, member of Tropical Lodge 56. MARY "MIMI" DAVIS (WELCH) (CARDOSI) (FMHS 1941) 2003-01-16 Mimi (Mary) Cardosi, age 78, of Fort Myers, died Tuesday, January 14, 2003. Mimi was a life long resident of Fort Myers, graduating from Fort Myers High School class of 1942. She was once a renowned decorator in the Tampa Bay area, before retiring to Fort Myers to begin her last career as the owner of several resort retail stores in Southwest Florida. Mimi and her husband Bob Cardosi, retired to travel the world over. Mrs. Cardosi has two grandchildren, Tim Welch from Neptune Beach, and Erin Welch from South River, New Jersey, and a son, Rusty Welch from Staunton, Virginia. CLIFTON NORWOOD FOXWORTHY (FMHS 1935) 2002-08-15 Clifton Norwood Foxworthy, age 86, of Pensacola, Florida died Tuesday, August 6, 2002. Mr. Foxworthy was born June 29, 1916 in Fort Myers, Florida. His parents and grandparents were natives of Mt. Carmel, Kentucky. After graduation from Ft. Myers High School in 1935, Mr. Foxworthy attended and graduated from The University of Tennessee in 1939 where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Social Fraternity. He served his country during World War II in the Army Air Force and later served in the US Air Force Reserve, retiring as a Colonel. During the war, he attended Harvard's Business School. After the war, Mr. Foxworthy and his wife, Mary Lou Shinkle Foxworthy moved to Iola, Kansas and resided there for seven years, where he served as President of the Kiwanis club, Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce and was elected as Vice President of the Board of Education. Following the death of his father, Boyd Clifton Foxworthy in 1953, Mr. Foxworthy and his family returned to Ft. Myers to manage and own his family's business, Foxworthy Furniture (& Interiors) company. He was active in community and civic affairs in Fort Myers, serving as President of the Edison Pageant of Light and as Board Member of Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers for thirty years. He especially enjoyed his friendship with Thomas A. Edison and his family (?). He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church Ft. Myers, Florida where he was an Elder, Deacon and Trustee. After his move to Pensacola in 1999, following his wife's death, Mr. Foxworthy also became an Associate Member of First Presbyterian Church, Pensacola. His wife of fifty-three years, his parents, Boyd C. Foxworthy and Mary Turner Foxworthy and his sister Eloise Barber (FMHS 1923) preceded him in death. Survivors include: one daughter, Shirley Linne and her husband William Linne of Pensacola, Florida; one son, James Clifton Foxworthy and his wife Marcia Foxworthy of Carmel, Indiana; brother Robert E. Foxworthy and wife Betty B. Foxworthy of Ocala, Florida; sister-in-law, June Powell and her husband, Alva Lee Powell, Paola, Kansas; one grandson; three granddaughters and one great grandson; two nieces and three nephews. JAMES LOUIS BATTISTA (FMHS 2001) 2002-07-23 James Louis Battista, 19, of Cape Coral, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, from injuries received in an automobile accident in Charlotte County. He was born Jan. 15, 1983, in Elizabeth, N.J., a son of Louis and Marcelina Ferreros Battista. He attended St. Andrew Catholic School and was a graduate of Fort Myers High School in 2001. He had just completed a year of study at the U.S. Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I; was an avid lacrosse player participating in both high school and at college; and was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church. Survivors include his parents, Louis and Marcelina Ferreros Battista of Cape Coral; his sister, Lauren Battista of Cape Coral; and an uncle, Ralph Battista of Greenwood Lake, N.Y. Visitation was held Sunday, July 21, from 1 - 3 p.m. in the chapel of Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 1630 Pine Island Rd., Cape Coral.
