He was 99. Halgrim, for whom Halgrim Street is named, moved to Fort Myers at age 10 and graduated from Fort Myers High School in 1927. Halgrim attended Cornell from 1927-29 but returned to Fort Myers before completing his four-year degree in horticulture. His famous friend and mentor Edison had encouraged his studies but then cut them short, Cornell President Emeritus Frank H.T. Rhodes said on April 26, when Halgrim received an honorary degree from Cornell. Halgrim went on to become a celebrated local hybridizer and collector of crotons, a colorful plant so favored by Edison that he once reportedly had the largest collection in the country at his winter residence. His son, Robert Halgrim, 62, of Alva, who took over as curator for his dad before retiring in 1993, said his father met Edison at the theater downtown, where Edison regularly went to watch silent movies and where Halgrim ran the projector. The senior Halgrim was a Sea Scout, an arm of the Boy Scouts of America that focuses on boating and swimming, and caught the interest of Edison. After Edison put a pool in his winter home, he recruited Halgrim to teach his grandchildren how to swim. The elder Halgrim remained lifelong friends with the Edisons and became curator of their home in 1948 after the estate was deeded to the city of Fort Myers. He retired as curator in the early 1970s. MARY ALICE SMITH BROWN (FMHS 1954) 2006-01-25 Mary Alice Brown, age 69, died January 18, 2006, after a lengthy struggle with various illnesses. Despite extraordinarily adverse health difficulties during the past several years, to the very end she lived her life to the fullest with a positive outlook, with strength, with dignity, with courage, with beauty, with love, and most of all, with faith.
