WALTER LANGFORD "PERK" PURSLEY (FMHS 1935) 10-1-2006 Walter Langford Pursley, died September 29, at the age of 88 under the kind care of the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. Walter is survived by Billie, his wife of 65 years, two daughters, Linda Leckey of Tampa, Tricia Pursley, Pass-A-Grille, and a son, Walter Pursley, Jr., Anna Marie Island; grandchildren are Lillie McPherson, Rock Hill, SC, Leah Armstrong, Tampa, Lila Leckey, Miami, Charlie Pursley, Palm City; great-grandchildren are PJ and Sophie McPherson. Walter's love of horticulture and his business career began long ago in his home town of Fort Myers. Though St. Petersburg was his home since the early 1940s when he was the Army Air Corp Base Commander at the Pinellas Airfield, he continued to say the he felt most at home after crossing the Caloosahatchee River. Pursley descended from a long line of early Florida pioneers; noteworthy was his great-grandfather Capt. Francis Asbury Hendry for whom Hendry County was named. Further noted, growing up with his grandfather Capt. Fred Menge, Pursley regularly enjoyed the company of Menge's friends, Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. Doubtless, the inventive spirit of these brilliant men sparked Pursley's belief that he could achieve his dreams. Pursley's entrepreneurial tenacity made him a leader the turf grass industry, where he was often honored and widely credited for raising its standards. Career highlights include the exclusive introduction to the market of specialized grasses, such as "Seville" St. Augustine. Pursley's marketing genius made the term "rooted grass plug" a household word. He was the first to bring to the public a "do-it- yourself" concept of lawn establishment, selling countless millions of pre-rooted grass plugs from Florida to Texas. Pursley holds a U.S. Patent for "Cashmere", a zoysia grass he discovered growing up in the Florida Keys. As a young man, he acquired a love of fresh cut flowers while flying gladiolus bulbs from Cuba as owner of an air freight business. One of his first retail venues was a concession at Webb's City, as well as a florist, The Flower Dell, that he owned and operated from two locations on Central Avenue. Later, as his turf endeavors developed, Pursley saw a need for the public to have a "window" to his turf farms in Manatee County, and he eventually opened nine full service retail garden centers throughout the Tampa Bay area. Along another avenue of interest, Pursley was a pioneer in planned community developments in Pasco and Manatee Counties with involvements in golf course communities, such as Magnolia Valley in New Port Richie, and River Club in Bradenton. He loved fishing, golfing, flying, bird-watching, and traveling. He adored his family and traveled frequently with them, often spending six months of the year in North Wales. While the cities of St. Petersburg, Bradenton and Fort Myers are surely more beautiful as a result of his donations of thousands of Washingtonia Palms, his family and friends are equally graced as a result of his impact on their lives. ==PICTURE== A private graveside service will be held at the Frierson-Hendry Cemetery in Fort Myers, Pursley's family cemetery.
