Lalai - she insisted on LAY-LAY as the correct pronunciation of the name by which she was known to all - was proud to have called Fort Myers home for 83 years. She was born Sept. 5, 1917, to Eulalia and Harvey Hattaway in Chauncey, GA, and moved to Fort Myers at age 7, following the death of her father. Lalai was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, founded in part by her family in 1889. She participated in the altar guild and was a charter teacher at St. Luke's Parochial School, a forerunner of the Canterbury School. They were married 42 years, until his death in 1986. Lalai also was preceded in death by her mother, her stepfather, James A. Cannon Sr., and her sister, Sara Virginia H. Sapp (FMHS 1933). On Sunday, Feb. 18, Lalai caught two beautiful catfish and a shellcracker from her wheelchair, positioned at the edge of a pond in Lehigh Acres. Her children remain eternally grateful for their irrepressible fishing gene. She leaves a Stout family also grateful for her presence, guidance, love, loyalty and charity: son Charles Byron II (FMHS 1965), his wife, Grace Daniele (FMHS 1965), and their children Byron (Johna) and Stacey; son James Nathan (FMHS 1967), his wife, Ann, and their children Julie, David (Tori), John (Crissy), Frank (Lisa) and five great grandchildren; and son Timothy David (FMHS 1972) and his children Sara and Nathan. GEORGIA MAE MASSIE (PICKETT) (FMHS 1954) 8/23/2007 Survived by husband, Rev. Bill A. Pickett, children and grandchildren: Mark, Adelaide and Sarah Pickett; Clerk, Diane, Mackenzie and Drew Pickett; Philip; Elizabeth, Lee and Wesley Pickett; brother, Jim and Shari Massie. Georgia Mae was born in Ft. Myers, FL, daughter of George and Shirley Massie. As a third generation native Floridian she was proud of her heritage and her family. She grew up in Ft. Myers where she lived until meeting Bill Pickett while in school at Florida Southern College. They were married in Central Methodist Church on March 25, 1956. They then moved to Tennessee where they started a pastoral ministry and a family. In 1963 they returned to Florida and for the next 37 years they served churches in Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa. Georgia completed her Bachelor's Degree in Education at Jacksonville University in 1965 and embarked on a 19 year elementary school teaching career. Retiring in 1985 she and Bill moved to Orlando to serve the Pinecastle UMC. Bill retired from the United Methodist ministry in 2000 and they built the first home "of their own" in southeast Orlando. In retirement they were active in helping start the Spring of Life United Methodist Church on Moss Park Road. As a devoted Christian woman and the wife of a pastor, Georgia was active in churches across the State of Florida her entire life. Even though being married to a pastor is ministry enough for most preachers' wives, Georgia was a minister in her own right. She organized and led numerous Bible studies. She taught Sunday School regularly, and was especially fond of "match making" while leading the young adult Sunday School classes in the churches she and Bill served. She loved the beach, their cabin in the NC mountains, flowers of every variety, chickens in the kitchen, and large costume jewelry. ==PICTURE== Memorial Service will be held at the Pincastle UMC, M 731 E. She was an easy choice as president of the show choir her senior year at Fort Myers High School. She was destined to be a lawyer. Barclift, a 2003 Fort Myers graduate, died Tuesday morning in a Gainesville hospital after being struck by a car while jogging early Monday. She was 22. "Everyone who knew her loved her," said Rachel Sikkenga, who met Barclift as a junior in high school when the two performed in show choir. Since graduation the two kept in touch through phone calls and the Internet. Barclift brought people together. "Everyone that knew her knew each other," Sikkenga said. "She was spontaneous and quirky and always just a joy to be around." Barclift, who graduated from FSU this past spring, was jogging in Gainesville about 8:20 a.m. Monday. She crossed a street against a "Do not walk" light, said Ali Soule, of the Gainesville Police Department. A vehicle going through a green light hit her, Soule said. She was pronounced dead at Shands hospital about 10:45 a.m., said Steve Orlando, University of Florida spokesman. Barclift was a first-year law student at the University of Florida. Her father is Assistant U.S. attorney Robert Barclift based in Fort Myers. A Facebook group in memory of Barclift has accumulated more than 400 members. At FSU, she majored in international affairs and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta. "I'm still kind of in shock right now," said Kate McCoy, a sorority sister and a senior biology and physics major at FSU who created the Facebook group. McCoy described Barclift as a "social butterfly." She was intelligent, too. Barclift was in the Pre-Law Society and graduated with honors. "She was going to make a great lawyer," McCoy said. Barclift was also quirky, eating cheese with just about every meal and showing people how she could stick her fist in her mouth, said McCoy. Barclift and her circle of friends at FSU often had slumber parties at each other's apartments, watching TV shows and playing board games. McCoy drove to Gainesville Monday with a friend when she found out Barclift was going into a surgery she might not survive. She said about 50 people came to Barclift's hospital room while she was in a coma and talked to her. "I'm glad I was able to do that," she said. "I don't think I'd be able to get over not being able to see her before she died." The News-Press staff writer Ryan Lengerich contributed to this story.

KELLY DELL HARRISON (FMHS 1988) By Angela K. Parker April 17, 1990 Fort Myers FL News-Press Staff Writer When Kelly Dell Harrison, 20, walked into a room, her bubbly personality lit it up. "She was the kind of person who couldn't wait to tell you about her day, " said her sister, Cyndi Capel. "She would walk in and immediately sy, 'Hey, guys -- guess what?'" Miss Harrison, 20, was killed Tuesday morning when her Jeep overturned on U. S. Highway 41 near Boy Scout Road after being struck from behind by another car. "For the last year, that Jeep was her life," Capel said fondly. "It was a little funny when she first started talking about getting a Jeep because she was always concerned about her looks. "But after she got it, she just loved it. She and some of her friends would go out and drive it around in the woods and get it dirty, but as soon as she got home, she would run out and wash it right away." Born in Arcadia, Miss Harrison was raised in Fort Myers. In 1988, she was graduated from Fort Myers High School. Always active and athletic, Miss Harrison enjoyed playing volleyball and spending her time at the beach -- a place she dreamed of living. She is survived by her parents, Jim F. Harrison of Fort Myers and Mary Jane Alexander of Sneads, FL; grandmother Ruth Addison of Arcadia; two brothers, George and Charlie Alexander, both of Sneads, FL; one sister Cyndi Capel and brother-in-law Tim Capel, both of Fort Myers.
