FORT MYERS TROPICAL NEWS, October 8, 1927

The Dreadnaughts of Lakeland high school yesterday
rode the Green Wave of Fort Myers for a 13 to 6 victory
in a bitterly fought football battle, waged on
virtually even terms for three periods.

Rallying at the opening of fourth quarter to tie
the score on a brilliant 30-yard pass from Buck Armeda
to Harry Pursley, Syd Ellison's huskies threatened
dangerously to snatch victory from defeat before the
closing whistle.

The Lakeland even took an early lead in the first
quarter after a 70-yard march down the field, smashing
through Fort Myers' forward wall with slashing off
tackle plays through the right side of Ellison's line.

                   Lost Punt Fatal

Shortly after the Green Wave had knotted the score
in the fourth period, Ed Taylor, flashy right end of
the visitors, recovered a Lakeland's punt, which
bounced through a group of Fort Myers backs and put the
Dreadnaughts 15 yards from the Fort Myers goal. After
failing to break through the Green line, Doc Melton,
sensational Lakeland back, tossed a neat pass to Mobley
over the line. Capt. Collins kicked goal from
placement.

With the score again in favor of Lakeland, the Fort
Myers lads took the ball on the kick-off with Tommy
Thompson dashing 15 yards to his own 40-yard line. A
clever forward pass from Armeda to Moore was good for
26 yards, but Mobley dashed through the Fort Myers
defense and intercepted a second long heave to smother
the final threats of Ellison's men.

Ted Bylaska placed the Green Wave in a scoring
position, when the fourth quarter opened, by recovering
a Fort Myers punt and dashing to Lakeland's 19-yard
line. Armeda passed to Pursley who ran around left end
for the touchdown. Armeda's attempt for a placement
was blocked.

Fort Myers threw away a chance to score in the
third period. Getting the ball on the kick-off,
Armeda, Thompson and Ellison started a drive which
ended with Ellison's 19-yard sprint to Lakeland's one
yard line. On the next play, he fumbled and Ed Taylor
recovered for Lakeland. Thompson and Armeda made
sensational dashes of 18 and 15 yards in the grand
march to the shadow of the Lakeland goal posts.

Buck Armeda, Jack Ellison, Harry Pursley and Ted
Bylaska divided honors for Fort Myers with Tommy
Thompson sharing the glory. Armeda was practically the
whole backfield during the greater part of the game.
Bylaska and Pursley held the left side of the Fort
Myers line while the right side weakened and wavered.

The loss was the first the Green Wave has suffered
this season. Palmetto and Sarasota had previously been
defeated.
